Blair sank onto the edge of her bed, lifting a hand to her temple, frowning. Her head pulsed and her mouth was dry.

Teagan stood across the room, staring at her as if she’d sprouted horns from her forehead. “What’s happening again?” Teagan asked.

“I’m not sure… umm… when did you come in?”

“When did I come in?” Teagan demanded. “Like two minutes ago, and you were… I don’t know. What was that? Some kind of seizure? Do you get seizures?”

Blair stood and moved shakily to her desk, where she picked up her water bottle and took a long drink. Her notebook was still open to her sketch of the dead girl at Rho Upsilon Nu. She quickly closed the cover.

“No. It wasn’t a seizure.” Blair didn’t look at Teagan, didn’t want to explain what had just occurred. The vision of the overgrown field, the running, a horrified scream piercing the quiet night followed her still.

Teagan stood, watching, waiting for an explanation.

“Sometimes… umm… I have these…” Blair touched her throat. The flesh felt tender and she had the distinct sensation that someone had just ripped a necklace from around her neck. “Sort of like out-of-body experiences. I don’t know how else to describe it.”

Teagan watched her uneasily. “I don’t understand.”

“It’s a long story,” Blair murmured. A long, strange story that was so unbelievable she’d never told it to anyone.

Teagan crossed her legs, rested her hands on her knees. “I have time.”

Blair took another sip of water, wondered if she was about to alienate the only friend she’d made at Husher University.

“When I was seven,” Blair said, “my parents took me to this big fall festival party put on by the private school they were trying to get me into. There was a huge bonfire, a hayride, apple picking, the whole deal. Somehow, I got separated from my mom and dad. This middle-aged guy took my hand and asked me if I was lost. He seemed so normal and nice. I told him I couldn’t find my parents, and he said he’d just seen them and they asked him to take me to the next place—another orchard up the road. It didn’t even cross my mind to question him. He was an adult and acted like he knew my parents, so I went with him. He led me away across the grass, away from the property to the roadside where this old dark-colored car sat. I knew it was old because it was big and boxy, like a boat on wheels, you know?”

Teagan nodded.

“Anyway, he let go of my hand and got out his keys to unlock the car. All of a sudden, I wasn’t behind the car anymore. I was in the backseat looking out through the back window.”

“He kidnapped you?”

Blair blinked, looked at Teagan. She’d begun to drift, had almost forgotten another person sat in the room with her. “I was in the car looking out through this grimy back window, a scream bubbling in my chest, but it wasn’t me. I was still outside the car staring at that back window.
